Road Trip 66 App Reviews

Fantastic App! Every Route 66 fan/traveler should consider this app!

This does not appear to be a turn-by-turn app. But thats not what I expected it to be. Rather, it is a very comprehensive guide to the multitude of points of interest and attractions located along famed Route 66. Everything from hotels/motels, restaurants, kitschy art objects, famous gas stations, and more. The level of detail is enough to fill a book, yet the information and mapping is all laid out in a logical and extremely useful fashion. It seems the developers have thought of just about everything. They even include a red line along the map showing you the route to take to stay on the original Mother Road (again, it is not turn-by-turn navigation, but at $3.99, I wouldnt expect it to be). Ive traveled much of Route 66 over the past 3 years. A group of us are planning a big road trip to do all of Route 66 from Chicago to LA this year. This app will be an invaluable aid for that trip! I own multiple books on Route 66 and treasure them all. But this app will take up zero room in the glove box and it is a lot more convenient to use than a book. Two big thumbs up from me!

A great app for info and locations.

The app has done what it said it would do. Getting ready for a road trip on Route 66, and I am using this app to mark locations to stop and see. I am looking forward to using this app on the road, Thanks for all the great info in one place.

Exactly what I was looking for

I was interestedin doing a cross-country trip from LA to Chicago. This ap is perfect to find remnants of the old route 66, along with tidbits of info along the way. Thanks for publishing this!

Great Route 66 App!

This is what I was looking for! It has detailed maps of the route, shows upcoming historical sites ... and I never have to leave the application to switch between these features. Though Ive traveled Rt 66 many times, I still found new sites with this app. Great app & great execution! Thank you :-)

Thank you!!!!!!!

Just returned from driving most of the Mother Road (minus 100 miles) and the app was fabulous!

Couldnt have done the drive without it!

Just completed the West to East route, this app was an invaluable tool! The roots was easy to follow and the pins marking the sights were extremely helpful. Only cons: there are no easy directions listed, you just have to follow the dot on the map. Also, it would be nice if the back buttons appeared on the info screens for the pins, in addition to the image screens.

Cool, but...

...its a little buggy, crashing when opened. Once you launch it successfully, keep it open. One feature suggestion: in the "list" view, let the user organize the from current location easteard or westward. Currently, it lists attractions by distance, but in either direction.

Must have for any Route 66 traveler!

Would LOVE an Update!!!!- Some things listed on the app that were not where they should have been, (Henrys Rabbit Ranch in IL and Shoe Tree in OK) I found this app from a conversation I had about Route 66 on another website. After checking it out and seeing the very small amount of reviews, I decided to take a chance. I am happy that I did. This app has so much more info than I ever thought, so much more than I have been able to find so far! Excellent job!! There is only one small change I would like to see... Once I tag something as "Wanna see it", I think it would be cool if it could make my list of "wanna see its" into its own map, or even create a new color code for those push pins so that I could see where my "wanna see its" are in relation to the rest of everything else. This way I could either follow the route to see what I am most interested in, or bookmark them in a way that I will be able to see them on the map as I go. It would help so that there wasnt so much flipping back and forth between screens and if I didnt have to type in all my sites into a map directory for printing. Other than that, this app is awesome, lots of info, great pics. Is there an HD version for iPad coming?

Good Idea but still needs work

Application navigation is defective. Look at the map and there are plenty of great things to see! Press to sett the details about them and there is useful information. Returning back to the map seems to be confusing for the software, usually brings up a world map. This app wont work on a device not connected to net and is very unreliable for one that is. If they fix the app navigation, this will be a 4+ star app.

Do NOT UPDATE... deleted all my saved data

WTH...this update wiped out all my "wanna go" and "seen it" tags. It took me hours to set it all up, an its all gone. UPDATE 7/10. Heard from developer and they seemed to have fixed the issue. Although it appears my data is gone. Very helpful and responsive to my comment on their website. Still mad at the loss of my data, but Ive upgraded the rating to 4 for the great service.

Owner

We recently made the trip and this app beat out all the other books, maps, etc., that we had. We would have been lost without it. I highly recommend it!! Great information and easy to use!!

EXACTLY what I wanted!

I have a ton of Route 66 books & websites but this app works directly with GPS so it keeps track of where you want to go & where youve been! Lots of photos and info. I cant wait to try it on the road in just a few weeks!

Traveler1

This is a truly an outstanding app. I drove the entire route using only this application. It is loaded with suggestion on things to do and see but more importantly it is the closest thing you will find to a GPS turn by turn.

Texas/Oklahoma

I used this app for research as well as my "GPS". I took a trip on Route 66 for the Texas and Oklahoma part. I was able to map out my trip before hand. My inspiration for my trip came from a brochure from Oklahoma, but the use of this app showed me where so many more treasures were. The owner of this app responds to any questions you have promptly. Thank you for helping me make this memorable trip!

We Used This!

No, we are not the makers of this product---we are actual customers who used this for a Route 66 road trip. It was awesome!!! It really helped us find places specific to our Route 66 trip that we wouldve never found by just driving through. We saw a bunch of historic sites and even met people who were part of the making of the movie "Cars" in their hometown! It was a quick and easy--to-use app while driving through (for the passenger, of course). Lots of good information provided so we could determine where we wanted to stop or not, which saved time for our vacation. Also, the info was not only useful and informative, but had a comedic value, too! Maps were spot-on. We would definitely use it again. 5 stars! Props to this app maker-thanks!

Not what it could be

Help button leads to a broken link. App gripes at you when it cant locate you, but doesnt give you any clear instructions on how to fix this. Good idea but cant take advantage of all features due to poor documentation

OK I guess

This app is just a list of all the places in the guidebooks overlaid on a basic Google map. It does not provide navigational guidance and the scale when you zoom to your current location is too wide, making the map hard to browse. Restaurants and motels are lumped into the same pushpin category, and all attractions are lumped into one category, so its hard to declutter the map. Many of the roadside attractions in the CA and AZ segments are just ruins. Still for 99c it will get you started in place of a guidebook but you can supplement your trip with a navigation app and online reviews. You can call the places directly from the phone numbers in the app.

Exceeded Expectations

Near perfect, nice if it was formatted for iPad. The first time we took The Road we used the ring bound "bible" which worked but required a real navigator to pay attention. This time we took the book and this newfangled app. as a backup.....we never looked at the books. My 22 year old son navigated, he had trouble with the book last time, this time the app. worked much better for him. An added bonus was the GPS feature, we could tell where we were! Since this was our second trip we bypassed some of the city routes (like Albuquerque). Once past the city the app. let us see where to go to get back on The Road. It works without wifi or cell coverage, relying on GPS to operate (if your iPad or iPhone has GPS which most of the new ones do). The only shortcoming of no cell coverage was it couldnt download pictures of sites along the way, but the was no biggie, the ample descriptions were still there. You can even report changes to the route that you observe (like closed bridges) to warn others, and get prompt responses from the publisher. Highly recommend this to anyone; Road newbie or veteran. LOVE this App!

Update - Im currently ON my Route 66 Trip and on my first day in Illinois, I realized how truly amazing this app is. It immediately proved to be invaluable - its saved me so much time and effort - to literally be able to see how close I am to a point if interest, especially a hard to find one, is a God-send. Ive saved so much time by not having to dig through my books every 5 minutes for what I want to see next. Thank you SO much for creating this app - its invaluable and instantly enriched my trip experience 100-fold! Ive had this app for over a year now and have been using it to help create my itinerary for an upcoming October 2013 trip. This app has been beyond helpful in my research and planning, I cant thank the developers enough! Cant wait to put this to use on my trip!! :D

Great App!

A few things were out of date or in the slightly wrong place but thats the nature of any travel app especially on a road like 66 where everything is constantly changing. Its also very easy to alert the app of changes if you see anything missing on the road. I couldnt have done my Route 66 trip without this app! I had a ton of other maps and guides but almost never used them!
